Background

Historically Pentecostal and Charismatic churches have maintained the outdated belief that homosexuality is a sin, a choice or the result of a dysfunctional upbringing. This belief has caused untold torment and trauma for many trying to resolve their issues of faith and sexuality.

If you come from a Pentecostal or Charismatic background you probably have sensed the presence of God, seen miracles and healings, enjoyed vibrant worship, spoken in tongues, believed that the bible is the inspired Word of God and had prayers answered.

If you are gay or lesbian, then at some stage you’ve believed that homosexuality is against God’s will and you must change. You’ve prayed and cried out to God to set you free but you nothing’s changed. Why can’t you change your attraction to the same sex? Maybe you are just too weak? Is God ignoring you or is that you don’t have enough faith? You may have left the church, been thrown out or are living a closeted life still struggling with your sexuality.

Because your belief has been the foundation of your life and you can’t change your sexual orientation, you are forced to respond in one of 3 ways.

1. Reject your beliefs – and possibly live with a feeling something is missing in your life.

2. Put your beliefs on hold – it’s all too hard, I don’t want to think about it and live in denial.

3. Redefine your beliefs – develop a new spirituality that celebrates who you are without judgement or condemnation.

Some Pentecostal/Charismatic churches have become inclusive and welcoming of GLBTQI people. Scientific research, psychology and a deeper look at the scriptures has given us a more informed perspective. People are realising their sexual orientation is not a sickness to be healed or a sin to be forgiven. We believe things will increasingly change through an intelligent dialogue that moves people past their preconceived ideas, misconceptions and prejudices.
